Hello foodies,

As you probably know, I already admitted to being a big Chocoholic.

But apart from that, I must admit that I am also a Peanut Butter-holic. If there is even such a thing. If it isn’t… oh well, I just invented it.

I am that kind of girl that sneaks to the fridge late at night and gobbles up a spoonful of peanut butter.

Well, what can I do? After all, and in my defense, I’ve been a pastry chef. So I could say that it’s a habit I’ve picked up from work. Who could blame me, right?

But I know (and hope) that most of you are like me, so today I made a dessert for us, The Choco-Peanut-Butter-holics.

So I made a delicious chocolate peanut butter mousse that’s also vegan and don’t worry… Even though it looks like a guilty pleasure you’ll be surprised to see that it’s actually healthy.

Now, I found that a lot of foodies have many questions about chocolate mousse and I would like to address them first. Keep in mind that my answers are based on my recipe and I can’t say much about others.

So here it goes…

Is chocolate mousse healthy?

It all depends on the ingredients you use and how much you eat.
So it is healthy if you make it with dark chocolate and natural peanut butter (like I did today). You also need to make sure that none of the ingredients have sugar in them.

Another thing to watch out for is how much you’re having. I know it’s delicious and hard to stay away from it, but keep in mind that too much of anything can be bad for us.

So don’t gobble up 20 cups of chocolate peanut butter mousse and expect to have a wasp waist.

If you buy it from the store, then make sure you read the label as a lot of them may contain sugar or other unhealthy ingredients.

Is chocolate mousse vegan, or vegetarian?

Again, it all depends on the ingredients you use. I made this chocolate mousse recipe with vegetarian/vegan ingredients so this one it is (I even used coconut milk).

Other recipes may include normal milk, gelatine, or double cream which are certainly not vegan.

Again, if you buy it from the store, read the label as they may contain traces of non-vegetarian ingredients.

Now let’s move on to another question that I often hear from foodies.

Easy Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse Recipe (5)

Is chocolate mousse easy to make?

This easy chocolate mousse recipe has only 6 ingredients. It takes just 15 minutes to prep and then you need to leave it in the fridge between 4 and 12 hours.

So if the waiting time doesn’t bother you, 15 minutes is certainly nothing.

Another question that I want to answer really quick is…

Which is the best chocolate mousse recipe?

Well, mine of course and certainly not those of newbies like Jamie Oliver or Gordon Ramsay.

Now joke aside, it’s all up to you and your tastes. Try them all (not at the same time!) and see which chocolate mousse you like best (I really hope it’s mine).

Finally, I am going to answer the last question with a video and a recipe.

I hope you like this easy mousse recipe and I can’t wait to hear your opinion in the comments.

Ingredients

  • 7 oz (200g) Dark chocolate chips - (70% cocoa)
  • 1 cup (about 10) Medjool dates - pitted
  • 1/2 Tbsp Vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (480ml) Coconut milk - (or any non-dairy milk)
  • 1/4 cup (60g) Peanut butter
  • 4 Tbsp Roasted Chopped Peanuts - (optional ingredient)

Instructions

  • Roughly chop the chocolate into small chunks.

  • Melt in the microwave or using a double boiler.

  • In a high-speed blender, add dates, vanilla, and milk. Blend on high until smooth.

  • Add in the melted chocolate, peanut butter and blend again until well combined. The consistency will be very runny first, but it will set and get denser once you let it chill in the fridge

  • Pour it into jars, cover and refrigerate overnight.

  • Top with chopped peanuts.

Recipe Notes

TIPS:

  • If you made this exact recipe you will get a very smooth and dense chocolate peanut butter mousse. However, if you like it less dense, just add more milk (about 1/4 of a cup). Experiment with it to get the consistency you like.
  • You can use any kind of milk, dairy or non-dairy. I made it with coconut milk (my favorite) and it came our super delish. But it will be just as good if you go for the normal one.
  • You can swap the peanut butter with any nut butter, like cashew or almonds.
  • Serve it as a chocolate spread on toast, biscuits, apple or pear slices, and even with bananas.

What are the four basic components of a mousse? ›

Four basic components of a Mousse

Mousse is a light and airy dessert made with eggs, sugar, heavy cream, and flavoring. All mousses have four basic components: aerated egg yolks, whipped egg whites, whipped cream, and a flavoring base.

What is peanut butter mousse made of? ›

To a separate large mixing bowl, add the peanut butter, cream cheese, and confectioner's sugar. Using a hand mixer on medium speed, beat until smooth. Add about ¼ of the whipped cream to the peanut butter mixture. Use the hand mixer to beat until incorporated.

Is mousse just whipped pudding? ›

Mousse is made by folding beaten egg whites or whipped cream into a cold milk and sugar base. Unlike pudding, mousse is not cooked and the addition of air to the mixture leads to a fluffier consistency and lighter texture. Mousse is typically served chilled or frozen.

Why is my chocolate mousse not fluffy? ›

Not fluffy enough, not chocolatey enough, too sweet, grainy, etc etc. Many “easy” chocolate mousse recipes tend to use too much cream so the end result is more like custard, rather than aerated like real chocolate mousse should be.

What is very crucial when making a mousse? ›

Temperature plays a critical role in the outcome of a mousse recipe. In fact, making a mousse requires a combination of the right temperatures and patience. Without these, your mousse will wind up a melted, grainy mess instead of a decadent, velvety treat.

What makes a good mousse? ›

The whipped cream and egg whites also provide fat and protein, which give the mousse its rich and smooth mouthfeel. Additionally, the use of high-quality chocolate can contribute to the creaminess of the mousse, as the cocoa butter in the chocolate can help to create a smooth and silky texture.

What is a substitute for heavy whipping cream in mousse? ›

To substitute for 1 cup (237 mL) of heavy cream, combine 7/8 cup (232 grams) of half-and-half with 1/8 cup (29 grams) of melted butter. This substitute works in virtually any recipe, including those that require whipping.

What is the difference between Bavarian cream and mousse? ›

Bavarian creams differ from mousses in that they are usually made by thickening a custard sauce with gelatin, then folding in whipped cream (not whipped egg whites). Mousses can be served “standalone” in a dessert cup or used as filling for cakes and Charlottes.

What is traditional mousse made from? ›

Mousse is the stuff of dessert dreams: incredibly light and also ridiculously rich. At its most basic, mousse is made by folding aerators into a base. These aerators can be whipped cream, meringue (egg whites + sugar), pâte à bombe (whole eggs and/or egg yolks + sugar), or a combination.

What are common mistakes when making mousse? ›

If your mousse feels grainy, it's because you have overwhipped your cream. Not following the whipping time given in the recipe and over whipping separates the cream into butter, which gives a grainy and broken texture to your mousse.

What is the best way to thicken chocolate mousse? ›

Once it is thoroughly combined, pour it back into your heavy saucepan from before. Heat that over medium heat, again stirring constantly, until thickened. For an even thicker mousse, livestrong.com suggests adding in ½ tablespoon of cornstarch and ½ tablespoon of cold milk until reaching your desired consistency.

Why put egg yolks in mousse? ›

The pate a bombe serves as the main body of our mousse; the proteins in the egg yolks are strong enough to hold all the air bubbles we'll incorporate, even after being mixed with melted chocolate and whipped cream. It's rich, velvety, and makes the best chocolate mousse in this chef's opinion.

What is mousse made of? ›

Sweet mousses are typically made with whipped egg whites, whipped cream, or both, and flavored with one or more of chocolate, coffee, caramel, puréed fruits, or various herbs and spices, such as mint or vanilla.

What does hair mousse contain? ›

A polymer or resin is the most effective and important component of hair mousse, which acts as a conditioning agent. These resins are long chain molecules that form a film on the hair allowing a tighter grip on the hair strands, making it harder to brush off and form a resistant film.

What are two components in a mousse? ›

To take a step back, mousses generally comprise four components – the base, the egg foam, a setting agent and whipped cream.

What are the characteristics of a good mousse? ›

In fact it should spoon very easily without being too firm and melt very nicely away on our tongue. It also needs to be light in consistency, too much fat can make the mousse heavy and simply too rich. After eating a serving of chocolate mousse we should not feel “Full”, but rather satisfied.
